Modern Warfare 3 Grosses $1 Billion in 16 Days, Beats Avatar
Activision today announced that Modern Warfare 3 brought in a whopping $1 billion in sales in its first 16 days on shelves. With this unbelievable achievement, Modern Warfare 3 broke yet another record. The record for grossing $1 billion the quickest was set by James Cameron’s Avatar, which generated $1 billion in 17 days back in 2009.
The previous Call of Duty title, Black Ops, managed to reach the $1 billion in sales milestone in a bit over 40 days.
While people are talking about “Call of Duty fatigue”, Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, has a different view of the franchise.
“Engagement of our Call of Duty audience continues to rise around the world. Call of Duty as an entertainment franchise has made an indelible mark on popular culture and its broad and continued success is further validation that audiences increasingly value interactive experiences over passive experiences”
To reach the $1 billion in sales figure, Modern Warfare 3 first sold 6.5 million units ($400 million) in its first 24 hours on sale in the US and UK after which it broke the 5 days sales record, earning Activision a measly $775 million.
As if Call of Duty isn’t doing well enough on its own, the Social Media / Stat Tracking service, Call of Duty Elite, managed to beat services such as Xbox Live, Netflix and Hulu to reach the 1 million premium members milestone in just 6 days.
Makes you wonder, how much longer will this all last…
