Modern Warfare 2 Security Patch in the Works
When Infinity Ward used Sony as a scapegoat for the recent hacks on the PS3, it kind of ticked me off. After all, how can you blame a recent hack for something that’s been going on for almost a year now? Infinity Ward Community Manager, Robert Bowling, should know better than pointing the finger in public. But that incident didn’t stop Infinity Ward from taking actions.
It wasn’t too long after that forum thread and PS3 jailbreak that Infinity Ward took action some responsibility. There was a security meeting with the coders at Infinity Ward and that meeting resulted in Robert Bowling having a good feeling about it and said some measures would be taken, but couldn’t go into details for obvious reasons.
Fast forward a month and we start getting some information about what’s going on. Apparently Infinity Ward is working on a security patch right now. This patch will be applied on all platforms. As far as we are aware, this is strictly a security patch and the game won’t be tweaked in any way, shape or form. Well, except for the pesky rock exploit on Fuel.
If this makes you think that Infinity Ward is working on Modern Warfare 2 again, you’d be mistaken. Robert Bowling says “this late in the game, gameplay tweaks are out of the question”.
One thing you should realize is that roughly 16 months have passed since the release of Modern Warfare 2 and Infinity Ward is still supporting their game, albeit minimally.
Update 1: Robert Bowling posted the following on the Infinity Ward forums:
The latest patch for Modern Warfare 2 has finished production and is now going through internal quality assurance. This new title update will address security issues that have affected online play.
We plan to release this update for all platforms (Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and PC). No release date is set at this time. Once an ETA is established, it will be posted here.
In addition to the security updates, this patch will also address a small geo exploit on the map Fuel, which players exploited in order to get inside a rock on the outskirts of the map.
Update 2: The security patch will go live on the PS3 on March 8th. The dates for the Xbox 360 and PC are pending.
Update 3: As planned the patch is now live on the PS3, which is the first platform to get it. We’ve only heard feedback from a few people, but the general thought is that this patch successful.
We have yet to see how successful the patch will be and when the Xbox 360 and PC version of Modern Warfare 2 will be receiving it.
