Best of Call of Duty Community 2012
Did you know we’ve been around for just over 2 years now? Back in September 2010 I thought creating a Call of Duty related website would be a fun way to spend my time, and boy was I right. It has been a blast.
In 2011 we had the pleasure of writing a total of 345 articles and I hoped we could do the same in 2012. Unfortunately we fell a little short and ended up with 297 articles written in 2012. We promise, we’ll make this up in 2013 with even more news, guides and anything else you’re interested in.
To be honest with you, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 wasn’t a great success for our website. Modern Warfare 3 might have sold a staggering amount of copies, but that didn’t reflect back on our website. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is a whole different ballgame. Since the launch of Black Ops 2 in November, we’ve seen a huge increase in the number of people visiting our website and it doesn’t look like this will be changing anytime soon.
It’s also worth mentioning that though our blog, or news side of the website, is what people are talking about, our forum has raked in the views. Out of the 10 most viewed pages in 2012, 5 pages are on our forum. That’s why I’m making a separate top 5 pages for the forum, something I didn’t do in the earlier years.
I would also like to take this moment to thank Jamie McDonald, one of our writers. He’s stuck with us for a very long time now and because of him, you read more news than you otherwise would. So, thank you Jamie!
With that off my chest it’s time to share the 10 most read articles on our blog and 5 most viewed threads on our forum.
10 most read articles of 2012:
#1 – Black Ops 2 Zombies – The Mysterious Ranking System: Though this article was only written on November 24th, it managed to attract a lot of attention. With the Zombie mode being as popular as it is, it’s no surprise that people look for information about how to rank up in the game mode. The article however doesn’t help you with that. It talks about the ranking system in general and the 5 ranks within the ranking system.
#2 – Modern Warfare 3 Prestige Emblems: This is the article I thought would be on the #1 spot as the most viewed article. Prestiging is one of the most important aspects of any Call of Duty game and it’s only understandable people search for the Prestige Emblems. I don’t know about you, but I’d want to know which Prestige Emblems I’ll be using for the coming months.
#3 – Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Prestige Emblems: As expected, highly ranked in the top 10 is the article showing you the 10 Prestige Emblems in Black Ops 2. During the Eurogamer Expo, David Vonderhaar showed the emblems for the first time to the public. Shortly after that the emblems appeared on the ELITE website and people got a good look at the 11 emblems, yes 11.
#4 – Call of Duty: Black Ops – My Theater: For reasons unknown to me, the article written about Black Ops’ Theater keeps showing its ugly head in the top 10 every single year. It’s an article about the My Theater functionality which isn’t used any longer. Perhaps ELITE wasn’t clear enough to people…
#5 – Maximum Prestige Level on Modern Warfare 3 Increased to 20?: When we broke the news about the maximum Prestige level being raised from 10 to possibly to 20, people were interested. It was for the first time in Call of Duty history the developers raised the maximum Prestige level after the game’s launch. Because of this, people were rather interested in this bit of news.
#6 – Black Ops Prestige & Rank Unlocks: This is another article showing its ugly head in the top 10 every single year. Perhaps the search engines are confusing Black Ops and Black Ops 2, resulting in them sending people to the wrong article? I can’t think of another reason people would be interested in Black Ops’ Prestige and rank unlocks.
#7 – 121 Questions Answered by Robert Bowling: A month before the release of Modern Warfare 3, I compiled a list of 121 questions about the game aimed at Robert Bowling. It took me ages to find all 121 questions on Twitter but at the end of the day, it paid off. It answered a ton of questions you might have and with a month before the game was launched, you were well-informed.
#8 – Modern Warfare 3 to Add 400 New Ranks & 5 New Prestige Levels: After the rumors about the maximum Prestige level being raised, Infinity Ward confirmed the rumors and announced that 400 new ranks and 5 new Prestige levels were added to Modern Warfare 3. PC users were the first ones to receive this update.
#9 – Black Ops 2 Zombies – The TranZit Pack-a-Punch Equation: Guides, people love guides. Especially if these guides involve the undead. The TranZit Pack-a-Punch guide was only written at the end of November, but it managed to make its way into the top 10 most visited pages of 2012. If you’re a somewhat serious Zombie slayer, you will have to know all there is about the Pack-a-Punch machine.
#10 – Modern Warfare 3′s Number #1 Player Arrested: Imagine how the Call of Duty community reacted when the (then) #1 ranked Modern Warfare 3 player, Kim Dotcom, was arrested by the FBI. No, he wasn’t arrested because he was the #1 player, he was arrested because he was the owner of a file sharing company which was acting a bit shady to say the least. Big scandal + Call of Duty = a lot of views.
5 most viewed forum threads of 2012:
#1 – Black Ops 2 Zombies – Tombstone Perk: Treyarch introduced a new Perk for the undead with Black Ops 2 and people wanted to know all about it. The forum thread which answers all your questions about the Tombstone Perk was created on November 14 and since then it has been viewed over 120,000 times already! If you have a question about the Tombstone Perk, you will find your answer in that thread.
#2 – 8 Black Ops 2 Zombies Emblems (Prestige): Another first for the Call of Duty franchise were emblems for the Zombies mode. Treyarch introduced a mysterious ranking system for the Zombie mode and you were all over the thread showing you the 5 Zombies ranks and the 8 emblems.
#3 – Black Ops 2 Zombies Ranking System Detailed: Just like the blog article, this forum threads talks about the Zombies ranking system. But instead of talking about it in general, it goes into the details of how the ranking system actually works. How you can rank up and how the deranking system works.
#4 – Will there be Bots in MW3 for Offline players in Multiplayer: A simple question asked by a forum member, yet it managed to get a ton of views. With Black Ops you could play against bots (either Combat Training or Online in split screen mode) and people where curious about whether the same was possible with Modern Warfare 3. Short answer to that question: No.
#5 – Black Ops 2 Patch Notes: A dedicated Black Ops 2 patch notes thread on our forum. All updates on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC can be found in this thread. If you want to know when a patch or update went live and what changes and updates made were with that patch, you must have a look at the patch notes thread.
2012 was a great year for us and together with you, we hope to make 2013 even better. Thank you!
