R. Lee Ermey Screams at Players in Call of Duty: Ghosts

R. Lee Ermey has made a successful career out of playing the role of a drill instructor on television, and in film. Best known for playing the role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, and for the role of Sarge in Pixar’s Toy Story franchise, Ermeyhas will again be reprising the role of a grizzled veteran when he joins the Call of Duty: Ghosts voice cast this Tuesday.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will not be the first time that Ermey has leant his voice to a video game. His list of credited works includes Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, Real War: Air, Land, Sea, and Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex. However, Call of Duty: Ghosts seeks to play up the unique strengths of Ermey’s vocal talents by having him motivate the player to do better, while informing them of their shortcomings. He will accomplish both of these tasks by yelling a lot.

Many of the audio clips that will be featured in the aptly named “Drill Instructor Voice Pack,” have been previewed in a trailer that was published on the official Call of Duty YouTube channel. Examples of Ermey’s quips include “you remind me of a younger, uglier me,” and “training is over, sweetheart; time for battle.” The trailer also contains sound gameplay advice, straight from the gunnery sergeant himself: “when they drop weapons, take them, you idiot.”

Ermey’s role in Call of Duty: Ghosts doesn’t look to be quite as off-color as his role in Full Metal Jacket – perhaps for the better – but it is arguably more interesting than most of the other aesthetic DLC that has been made available for the game. And if it all sounds a little weird, just remember that Infinity Ward also announced a Snoop Dogg voice pack, earlier this month.

The Drill Instructor Voice Pack will first be made available on Xbox Live, and will later be released for other platforms at a later date.
