Black Ops Finally Ousted by Pokemon and Others
Call of Duty: Black Ops was a huge commercial success and that goes without saying. The Cold War based Call of Duty has been atop the NPD charts since its release back in November. However, not even a game with Call of Duty to its name could withstand the mega-giant that is Pokemon. Both Pokemon Black and White for the Nintendo DS took the top spots according to NPD sales for the month of March.
Now those aren’t the only games to triumph over Black Ops. The long anticipated RPG by Bioware, Dragon Age 2, took the number four spot and Kaos Studios’ Homefront settled into third place of the NPD charts. Black Ops had to accept fifth best.
It isn’t surprising that anything labeled Pokemon topped the video game charts, but games that failed to reach their potential and beating out Call of Duty is quite shocking. Dragon Age 2, though highly anticipated, failed to impress critics and fans alike resulting in its 79 Metacritic score.
Homefront impressed even less with its nightmarish online issues and lackluster story. These two instances prove that (of course hype and) advertising sells. Can we say that we’re disappointed Black Ops is finally knocked off its sales throne or impressed that it lasted this long?
