Black Ops Surpassed $1,000,000,000 In Sales
When Activision and Treyarch announced Call of Duty: Black Ops, it was clear to the Call of Duty community that this would be an instant hit.
This assumption continued when week in and week out the pre-order numbers of Black Ops surpassed the pre-order numbers of Modern Warfare 2.
As this wasn’t proof enough, Black Ops managed to shatter the 1 day ($360 million) and 5 day ($650 million) sales records, which was previously held by Modern Warfare 2.
Today we can add another staggering number to the unbelievable list of numbers Activision, Treyarch and Black Ops managed to achieve. Today we can officially say that the Black Ops sales worldwide surpassed the $1 billion milestone. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 needed an extra month (Jan 2010) to hit the $1 billion in sales milestone.
“That is really the big story to me,” Kotick says. “Not just that it has generated $1 billion, but that more people play game the game daily than read USA TODAY and The New York Times combined. More people play the game every day than watch Leno, Letterman and Jimmy Fallon combined. Those are the kind of things that I think are staggering.”
With an estimated 16 million copies of the game sold to date (Activision did not release a unit sales figure) has generated more than 600 million hours of online gameplay so far. Citing Xbox Live figures from Microsoft, Activision says that the average player logs onto the game more than once a day and plays for more than one hour each time. More than half of that time is spent playing online with and against friends.
